Lay Dominicans
Who Are The Lay Dominicans?
Lay Dominicans are Catholic men and women who are called to live the charism of St. Dominic in the world. We are members of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic, sharing in the mission of the Order of Preachers while remaining in our ordinary state of life.
Some Lay Dominicans are married. Some are single. Some are parents, professionals, teachers, catechists, students, retirees, parish ministers, or workers in many fields. What unites us is a desire to follow Christ in the footsteps of St. Dominic and to give witness to the Gospel through prayer, study, fraternity, and preaching.
A Lay Vocation in the Church
The Lay Dominican vocation begins with baptism. As lay Catholics, we are called to holiness in our own state of life. We bring Christ into the places where we live, work, serve, suffer, rejoice, and build relationships.
To be a Lay Dominican is not simply to join a group or attend meetings. It is to respond to a call from God. It is a way of belonging to the Dominican Family and allowing the spirit of St. Dominic to shape how we pray, think, speak, serve, and live. Through formation, chapter life, and discernment, a Lay Dominican may eventually make a promise to live according to the Rule of the Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic. This promise deepens our baptismal commitment and unites us more closely to the mission of the Order.
Our Dominican Charism
The Dominican charism is often expressed in the phrase: to contemplate and to hand on to others the fruits of contemplation. Dominicans seek Truth because Christ is Truth. We study so that we may know Him more deeply. We pray so that our lives may be rooted in Him. We live in fraternity so that we may be formed together. We preach so that others may encounter the mercy and light of the Gospel.
For Lay Dominicans, preaching is not limited to a pulpit or classroom. We preach by the witness of our lives, by the way we speak, by the way we serve, by the way we defend human dignity, by the way we teach the faith, and by the way we bring truth and charity into ordinary conversations.
The Four Pillars Of Dominican Life
The Lay Dominican way of life is rooted in four pillars. These are not separate activities, but one integrated way of following Christ in the spirit of St. Dominic.
Prayer
We seek intimacy with Christ through the Eucharist, Sacred Scripture, the Rosary, the Liturgy of the Hours, silence, contemplation, and personal prayer. Prayer forms the heart of the preacher and keeps our lives centered on God.
Study
We study Scripture, theology, Church teaching, Dominican spirituality, Catholic Social Teaching, and the lives of the saints. We study not to win arguments, but to know Truth, love God more deeply, and serve others with wisdom and charity.
Community
We do not walk alone. We belong to a chapter where we pray, learn, discern, and grow together as brothers and sisters in St. Dominic. Community teaches humility, patience, listening, accountability, and love.
Preaching
We preach through words, actions, mercy, service, teaching, friendship, parish ministry, professional life, and family life. We hand on what we have received and bring the Gospel to the world around us.
Living the Vocation in the World
Lay Dominican life is not meant to remove us from daily responsibilities. It is meant to transform how we live them. We live this vocation at home, at work, in our parishes, in our friendships, in service to the poor, in moments of suffering, in moral decisions, in public witness, and in hidden acts of charity.
